As round seven of the Supersport World Championship concludes at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal, the PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda Team is left a little disappointed considering the potential displayed in the run up to the races, with Kaito Toba suffering a crash in the early stages of race 2 following contact with another rider and Khairul Idham Pawi crossing the line nineteenth.

WorldSSP riders Toba and Pawi took to the track for a final warm-up on Sunday morning ahead of the weekend’s second and final 17-lap race. With that completed, the team had to wait until 4.30pm local time for Race 2, considering the revised schedule for this Portimão round. As the race got underway, Toba made another rapid start from sixteenth, soon gaining two positions. Inside the points zone right from the start, the Japanese rider was part of a group of six riders and was oscillating between P14 and P16 through the initial stages. Unfortunately, a lap six crash through turn 4 following contact with another rider brought what was looking to be a promising race to a decidedly premature end for Toba. Pawi, twenty-third on the grid, also made up two places in the first couple of laps. Battling his closest rivals from start to finish, the Malaysian rider finished inside the top twenty, in nineteenth position.

The PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda Team now has a little over three weeks to prepare for the eighth WorldSSP round, which is scheduled to take place at the Nevers Magny-Cours circuit in France on 6-8 September.

"“Not much to say today. Another rider hit me and caused me to crash through turn 4. He was wide heading into turn 3, I entered on the inside and then we had to change direction through the next corner and that was that. A real pity as I was feeling quite strong and thinking I could finish inside the points again today. I’m mainly disappointed that I was denied the chance to finish the race.”"

"“I was hoping for a little more in today’s race 2 but at least I was able to get to the line and collect more data. Not an easy weekend but we continue to learn. We have a few weeks before the next round but I’ll use the time to train and prepare as well as I can for Magny-Cours, where hopefully we can make some more progress.”"
